Why Your 5 Star Rating is Hurting You

 Yes, you read that right. Before I explain, why negative reviews on Google will help your business, let’s take a look at some important data. As a Sales and Marketing Consultant, I’m always looking for ways to help you and clients of Carl’s Way Works grow your business. When it comes to online marketing, reviews matter.

I never realized until very recently a negative review could help you. So here are tips to provide my small business sales and marketing clients as well as my sales coaching clients.

Reviews are critical in establishing your online credibility. If you’re not online your out of business. Did you know that negative reviews could help your business and a 5-star review will start to hurt you?

Consumers trust reviews more if there are a few bad reviews mixed in with the positive reviews more so than they trust 5-star reviews.  Customers know nobody’s perfect, and if all you have are perfect reviews, they shy away fearing they are too manufactured. Where some negative reviews can make you more human.

All businesses covet the 5-star review. However, an optimal average score is 4.3 to 4.5 according to Bright Local  https://www.brightlocal.com/bright-ideas/. It turns out the 97% of people who read reviews read the review reply as well.

 

How to respond to negative reviews

According to Gather Up a reputation software management company, they recommend the following steps when receiving a negative review.

  1. Google- will remove reviews for the following reasons
    1. Extortion
    2. Ex-employees
    3. Public media attention
  2. When getting a negative review, start by introducing yourself and thanking them for taking the time to review.
    1. Don’t defend, criticize, or challenge the review.
  3. Express concerns and offer to help them solve their problem.

 

Remember your future customers are reading your reviews and they need to see that you are.

1.Real and on top of your reviews.

2. Make sure your reviews are recent. Within 2 weeks.

3. Respond to negative reviews and attempt to offer some problem-solving ideas.
